Mér dettur ekki hug að bregðast svo stórum væntingum!

Hópur Íslendinga sendi Herman Van Rompuy, forseta ESB, bréf með spurningum varðandi Icesave sl. föstudag.  Í kjölfarið voru fréttatilkynningar sendar á innlenda og erlenda fjölmiðla ásamt bréfinu. Hér heima voru það Morgunblaðið og Svipan sem birtu það (sjá hér og hér) og Smugan fjallaði um það líka (sjá hér) Nokkrir þeirra sem settu nöfn sín undir það birtu bréfið á bloggsvæðum sínum í upphafi vikunnar.

Eins og er höfum við rekist á bréfið á þremur erlendum miðlum. Þ.e. Irish Left Review, á síðu Max Keiser’s og bloggi Dave Harrisson’s. Þetta eru þó ekki einu viðbrögðin sem bréfið hefur fengið. Sendandi bréfsins hefur verið að fá svör og viðbrögð við bréfinu víða að síðastliðna daga m.a. frá einum þingmanni Evrópupingsin og, Michael Hudson. Hann hefur óskað eftir leyfum þeirra til að birta það sem frá þeim hefur komið opinberlega.

Svörin sem hafa borist eru öll til vitnis um mikinn stuðning bréfritara við málstað þeirra Íslendinga sem setja sig upp á móti því að hérlendur almenningur þurfi að bera þungan af skuldum einkarekinna banka. Sumir taka það fram að þeir vænta mikils af  viðspyrnu íslensku þjóðarinnar og sjá fyrir sér víðtæk og jákvæð áhrif í þeirra heimalöndum ef okkur ber gæfa til að hafna þessum samningum.

Michael Hudson, hag- og sagnfræðingur, ætti að vera Íslendingum að góðu kunnur. Hann hafði þetta um bréfið að segja:

It is a basic principle of eocnomic law — and indeed, of moral society — that no economy should be forced into a situation where the public takes such great responsibility for lawbreakers that it must submit to emigration to escape debt.

    There is no reason for Iceland to revert to feudalism, depopulation, emigration. The basic economic principle is that “A debt that cannot be paid under normal circumstances, should not be paid.”

    There also is a basic principle that creditors should take responsibility for bad loans.
    So what amazes me is how Iceland is not pressing its natural rights in this case — not to speak of its legal rights, that already exist.

    Evidently that requires a replacement of many current members of the Althing. I wish I could be brought there to help you.
